Finally Final!

Thank God!
This semester finally comes to an end.
Oh~ My summer vacation is coming to me.
I am so looking forward to my summer since my friend is coming here from Paris!
Great! That would be interesting.

Still, it is hard to believe that I will be a junior after summer break.
Time flys!

This week, I saw a film called "Blind Chance" by Kieslowski.
It is aimed at depicting the theme of chances of destiny.
A very fantastic film.

Recently, I have been listening to a band called "Bloc Party."
A British band.
I lover their British accent.

I now start thinking about my plan for summer.
I will have vacation with my family as my dad has retired this year.
He used to be a police officer.

Have a great summer, my friends!

Gulliver's Travel

After reading Jonathan Swift’s Gulliver’s Travels, I would assume that he was a misanthrope.

Based on the first chapter A Voyage to Lilliput, Lemuel Gulliver, the main character, travelled to a country that its residences are only one-twelfth size of normal human begins. Although the author was aimed at satirising the court of George I in this chapter, I would propose that he was simultaneously larking at human beings’ self-importance and arrogance as the author illustrated the Lilliputians are smaller than so-called normal humans even thought they have a government that works for their country just like the Great Britain.

Yet, the second chapter A Voyage to Brobdingnag, Gulliver was abandoned and found by a famer who is 72 feet tall. In my viewpoint, I would suggest the author was depicting humans’ littleness and fragility since humans become Lilliputians in Brobdingnag. Moreover, Gulliver was put in a travelling box, which, I would recommend, is served as the cage that human beings build for their pets or beasts. As the story going on, we could tell the unimportance of that travelling box since it was carried by a monkey and in the epilogue of this chapter it was seized and dropped by a an eagle.

The last chapter A Voyage to the Country of the Houyhnhnms, Lemuel Gulliver travelled to land that is governed by Houyhnhnms, horses or “the perfection of nature.” How come horse will become the perfection of the nature? From this perspective of the author, I would suggest that he was tended to be a misanthrope. Moreover, when Gulliver saw the deformed creatures “Yahoos” which are human beings in their base form, he showed his disgust and antipathy to them. After being expelled from the country of the Houyhnhnms, people he met, in his eyes, are all Yahoos. In the end, he went back to England, becoming a recluse, avoiding getting touch with his family and spend much time talking to horses.

According to those behaviors, I would promote the author was convinced that human beings are animal rationis capax, an animal capable of reason, instead of Animal Rationale, a rational animal. Instead of being born with it, reason is something human beings will obtain after receiving education and social experience. Based on his theory, at the beginning of our lives, we are merely Yahoos. In his letter to Pope, he mentioned that he loves individuals but hate the animals called human beings. In my point of view, I would assume that the definition of individual is not only a human who is well-educated, but also is rational and has independent thinking and emotions.

The Road Not Taken and Citizen Kane

At the first reading of Robert Frost’s The Road Not Taken, what came to my mind immediately is a relatively apparent theme of this poem: choices people make for their lives. Including me, we all make choices or decisions every single day. Yet, if we could go back to the past and change our choices, things would be totally different from how they have been now; more importantly, we might not become who we are today. In addition, regrets, happiness, sadness and other emotions or feelings might come to our mind when we think of our past; also, they are parts of our memories. Combing these ideas together inevitably reminds me of a film by Orson Welles titled Citizen Kane. In the following paragraphs, I am going to show how Robert Frost’s The Road Not Taken along with Citizen Kane of Orson Welles connect to our daily lives, what their viewpoints to the destiny and choices are and how they are profoundly presented.
At the very beginning of the poem, The Road Not Taken, I would propose that we are exposed to one of the themes of the poem- choice. ‘Two roads diverged in a yellow wood, And sorry I could not travel both,’ depicts that we all have to make decisions and choose a way for our own destiny while standing in a crossroad of choices. Additionally, at the end of the first stanza, we could see that people would try to catch a glimpse of their future before making choices. I would imply the reason why people would try to foresee their lives is due to the uncertainty or the expectation of better lives.

Desire and Innocence?

After reading John Milton’s Paradise Lost, we could easily perceive that it is an epic poem that aimed at portraying the story of the Fall of Man: the temptation of Adam and Eve by the fallen angel Satan and their expulsion from the Garden of Eden. Yet, I would like to talk about whether if the behaviours of Eva and Adam and the consequence they have are out of desire or just mere innocence.
First, we could find out that Satan is a skilful talker from his persuasion to other rebel angels and subsequently organising his followers. When it comes to the scene when Satan returns to Eden, enters into the body of a sleeping serpent and successfully tempts Eve by compliments and tricking her with his rhetorical skill. After being tempted, Eve eats the fruit of the Tree of Knowledge and takes some fruit for Adam. As for Adam, seeing Eve has made mistake, deliberately commits the same sin. He says to Eve that as she was made from his ribbon, they are bound to one another so that if she dies, he must also die.
From that certain scene, I would imply that the reason why Eva will eat the fruit of the Tree of Knowledge is out of curiosity and innocence. However, her curiosity could be seemed as desire that make people want to know discover more information. As for Adam, he is seemingly smarter and more rational than Eva. Yet, if he has no love and so-called responsibility for Eva, would he still eat the fruit that Eva has eaten, too? In my point of view, I would suggest that there is certain innocence in Adam as well as in Eva.

Books

Recently, I’ve bought few books to read for my leisure time. I like the Catcher in the Rye the most since there were a lot of myths about that book, including that it had something to do with shooting in Columbine. Nevertheless, I think it was just a novel for teenagers to read. Though the usage of the language may not be appropriate to teenagers, it was close how teenagers think and feel about our society, or even reality. I really admire how J.D. Salinger use words to describe the feelings and mental condition of teenagers.
Also, this book reminds me of another book named Vernon God Little. Named as one of the 100 Best Things in the World by GQ in 2003, the riotous adventures of Vernon Gregory Little in small-town Texas and beachfront Mexico mark one of the spectacular, irreverent and bizarre debuts of the 21st century so far. Its depiction of innocence and simple humanity (all seasoned with a dash of dysfunctional profanity) in an evil world is never less than astonishing. The only to be set in the barbecue sauce capital of Central Texas, Vernon God Little suggests that desperate times throw up the most of heroes.
I this book, we can see the reflections of our personal lives and society nowadays. Through the eye of Vernon, the main character in this book, we could also have a glance at the subculture which is popular among teenagers like brands (Nike and Timberland) and celebrities (Van Damme, Dolly Parton and Pearl Jam).
This novel is talking about a boy is being arrested and questioned since his best friend committed murder of shooting in campus and killed himself. While he was being questioned, we can know how people twist your thoughts and truth through the whole process of his being questioned. There are a few paragraphs I like the most:
“Her lips tighten, she pulls her phone from a holster on her belt, and suspends one finger over a key, eyeing all the while. Then she jabs the key. The theme from Mission: Impossible chirps on a phone up the hall. “’Sheriff?’” she says. “’You might want to attend the interview room.’”
This wouldn’t happen if she had more meat in her box. The dismay of no more meat made her seek other comforts, that’s something I just learned. Now I’m the fucken meat.”
The reason why I like this part is that it is kind of portrait of the reality. Some said that we are live in the dog-eat-dog society. I totally agree with that.
This novel is satire to ridiculous small town life in America and also to media. I love this novel so much! I hope you guys can have a chance to read it when you get leisure time.
By the way, the author is DBC Pierre. DBC means Dirty But Clean. Wow! What a contradiction! To sum up, I hope you enjoy it!

The Road Not Taken and Citizen Kane

As we are required to work on an essay based on a English poem taught in Amber's class. I chose The Road Not Taken by Robert Frost.
In the following paragraphs, I would like to show how Robert Frost’s The Road Not Taken along with Citizen Kane of Orson Welles connect to our daily lives, what their viewpoints to the destiny and choices are and how they are profoundly presented.
Anyway, you might need to watch Citizen Kane in advance so that you could understand what I am saying better!
If anyone is interested in that film, just let me know! I have DVD.

Dear John

Last week, I went to a movie with my friend.
The movie, 'Dear John,' is a nice film.
Yet, since I am not in any relationship with any man, I am not really touched by the story!
Maybr I should watch it again when I have a boyfriend.
Just joking!

Recently, I have been busy working part-time, preparing the presentation for English Poetry, filming videos for Oral Traning and doing the reports.
Wow!
I feel like a superwoman for doing so many things without passing out.
Ich bin müde!

As I had to give a presentation last Wednesday for Andrew Marvell's To His Coy Mistress, I did search some information. And I found this...
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1SpVYlxhtdo

It is quite interesting.
Hope you enjoy watching it.

Furthermore, I watched a film called Mona Lisa at hom.
It is fantastic film, I would suggest.
It illudes that women are not necessarily to be caged by marriage, traditiona or family.
We could be as excellent as men!
We could have our own lives and thoughts!
Anyway, a great film!

I had started searching for the information for my final reports.
I am very certain that all the books about Kieslowski in the library had been borrwed by....me!
hahahahaha
If you are looking for those books, you may come to me!

To sum up, I gotta say....
what a busy week!
Ich möchte Urlaub machen!

About All the Articles I Read

This week, I read some paragraphs from The Name of the Rose. It is a story about religious murder. Actually, I think the story is a little bit boring for me since I have not much interest in religion except for Eastern Orthodox Church mentioned in Dostoevsky’s Crime and Punishment. Nevertheless, I think the movie of that book is quite exciting though. On the other hand, I read DBC Pierre’s novel Vernon God Little. I love that story. It is kind of satire. It talks about shooting in American campus. As I remember that Columbine is the most unforgettable tragedy to people who live in Denver. There is a documentary called”Bowling for Columbine” which was discussing about why the tragedy would happen in America. I watched that documentary before and I think it could make people to question themselves and give us some different perspectives toward that event. I realized many things after watching it.
Moreover,I read a essay Freedom for Free?, which was written by my favorite writer, Mario Vargas Llosa. It mainly focuses on political turmoil in Latin America. The author mentioned that many intellectuals from North America or European would have stereotype toward political condition of Latin America. The author remarked that it is unequal and unsuitable for those intellectuals to say so because they don’t really understand their living and historical background. Suddenly, I come up with an idea that whether people in Taiwan totally understand their history or even position in the world’s situation? I am curious about it.

'A Valediction: Forbidding Mourning’ by John Donne

In John Donne’s poem ‘A Valediction: Forbidding Mourning,’ we could easily sense the apparent appearance of the usage of metaphor. Moreover, due to course of English Poem which is instructed by Professor Amber Wang, I acquired a short poem titled ‘Metaphors’ written by Sylvia Plath. Like its first metaphor states ‘I’m a riddle in nine syllables,’ this poem is a riddle to be solved by identifying the literal terms of its metaphors. Yet, I myself would consider that it might be slightly difficult to understand the definition of metaphor by simply reading through poems.
After searching and reading some other poem and literal information, I would state that a metaphor is an analogy between two objects or ideas, conveyed by the use of a word instead of another. Plus, metaphor also denotes rhetorical figures of speech that achieve their effects via association, comparison, and resemblance, for instance, antithesis, hyperbole, metonymy, and simile; all are species of metaphor. Additionally, a metaphysical conceit is an extended metaphor or simile in which the poet draws an ingenious comparison between two very unlike objects.
‘A Valediction: Forbidding Mourning’ shows many features associated with seventeenth-century metaphysical poetry in general, and with Donne’s work in particular. The poem tenderly comforts the speaker’s lover at their temporary parting, asking that they separate calmly and quietly, without tears or protests. The speaker justifies the desirability of such calmness by developing the ways in which the two share a holy love, both sexual and spiritual in nature. Donne’s celebration of earthly love in this way has often been referred to as the ‘religion of love,’ a key feature of many other famous Donne poems, such as ‘The Canonization.’ In fact, he discovers ways of suggesting, through metaphysical conceit, that the two of them either possess a single soul and so can never really be divided, or have twin souls permanently connected to each other.
To sum up, I would suggest that ‘A Valediction: Forbidding Mourning’ is centered on a spiritual love that transcends the physical and perfectly ends with one of Donne’s most famous metaphysical conceits, in which he argues for the lovers’ closeness by comparing their two souls to the feet of a drawing compass — a simile that would not typically occur to a poet writing about his love.

How Cool!

I went to a bookstore this Thursday.
However, there was something cool happening!

I was walking around and browsing DVDs and albums.
Out of a sudden, a lady came by and said hello to me.
Interestingly, I was holding the DVD of Blue, one film of the Three Colours trilogy, when she asked whether if I love to watch films.
Of course, my answer was positive!
Soon after I answered, she started discussing films with me.
I gotta admit that she is a sweet and kind lady.
We had a great time chatting.
Anyway, we gave phone numbers to each other so that we could have a meal together and talk about films!

Moreover, Wayne, Judy and I worked together and writed a poem.
Let's see...

Cheat against loyality
Trust seems to be the only thing
Turn on each other when face difficulties
Connection is all the matters
Time that share with each other
Tie and neck are bonded together
Care is the only thing we offer

As for the topic.
How about guessing?
Yes, it's Friendship!
Hope you like it!

What A Busy Week!

Well, I got a feeling of tireness this week as we are required to do the video for speech.

I would suggest that I didn't do a good job as I didn't have much time to prepare and make the video.

I believe it is time for me to find the balance between part-time job and school now!

Moreover, I needed to attend the German exam.

I like German so much, yet, I am a bit concerned to take the exam.

Just carry on, Jin!

Yet, something nice happened, too.
Finally, I got the CDs of The Cardigans that I bought from internet.
I really enjoy their songs and would like to share with you guys.
What an awesome band!

All I want to do now is to have vacation and go back to the city I like the most, Paris!
Ich vermisse dich, Paris!
Je t'aime, Paris!
Te quiero, Paris!
I love you, Paris!
我愛你.巴黎!

The 'Three Colours' Trilogy

I watched some great films this week.

Three Colours trilogy is composed of three films, which are Blue, White and Red.

Each of them is respectively based on the three political ideals in the motto of the French Republic: liberty, equality and fraternity.
Among them, I like Blue the most as it perfectly portraits and enlightens audience what personal freedom is by presenting the suffer the main character had been through.

Yet, the reason why I would see the trilogy is that I admire the director Krzysztof Kieslowski so much for his unique technique for filming.
Also, I read some books about his works and him.
There was something so inspiring that he didn't succeed in the first attempt to be accepted by film school and until the third try did he succeed.
I would suggest that there is nothing impossible for people who are pursuing their own dreams.

Moreover, I enjoy the leisure time I have for this week since I don't need to work part-time.
That is awesome as I don't have to rush to the restaurant I work at soon after class!
Therefore, I have much time to read what I want to read!
To be honest, I love to read all kinds of books as long as they are written in English.

To sum up, I guess this semester would be great while it might be busy at the same time.
Viel Glück, Jin!

Merci Beaucoup, My Friends!

This week, I would say it was perfect since many good things happened.

First, I received a postcard and a keyring from my friend who lives in France.
He told me that the keyring was bought in Barcelona, Spain.
I love it!
In order to show my gratefulness, I decide to say thank you to my French friend in French!
Merci beaucoup!

Moreover, I received an e-mail from Dr. Andrew Wilson.
He said that he would send me some pictures which were taken in southern England.
I can't wait to see them!

Above all, I finally found an album by the band I like!
'The Cardigans' is the name of that band.
I was spellbound when I first heard their songs.

Anyway, it was wonderful week!

As for the school, I have to say it is good to see everyone again.
Yet, I guess I have to study harder since I was flunked for 2 subjects last semester!
My mom wasn't very happy about that.
Well, carry on, Jin!
